Started your asylum claim online but never pressed submit? What the November 2 cutoff means
For asylum claimants in Canada. As of October 2026.
Many people start their asylum claim in the IRCC Portal and then pause. They gather documents, wait for a translation, or look for someone to help. Usually the saved form just waits. This time, waiting has a date attached.
The problem: a cutoff on November 2, 2026
IRCC says changes to the asylum application start on November 3, 2026. Whether you need to redo part of your claim depends on one thing: had you pressed submit by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on November 2, 2026?
What happens to your claim, situation by situation
According to IRCC’s pages (updated October 1, 2026):
- You claimed inside Canada, started online, and did not submit by the cutoff: you will need to answer new questions and review your old answers. IRCC says your personal information will be saved.
- You claimed at the border, linked your claim to a Portal account, and did not submit by the cutoff: the same applies. New questions, a review of old answers, and your information is saved.
- You claimed at the border and never linked your claim to a Portal account: IRCC says the information collected will not be saved. You will need to link your claim and enter details about you and any family members again.
- You submitted before the cutoff: IRCC says you do not need to provide new information unless it asks you to.
What you can do now
- Check your status. Log in to the IRCC Portal and see whether your claim shows as submitted.
- If you are ready, finish before the cutoff. Every answer must be true and complete. Speed never replaces accuracy.
- If you are unsure about any answer, get help first. Speak with a licensed representative or a legal clinic. If someone helps you with your claim, IRCC requires a completed and signed Use of a Representative form.
- If you cannot apply online for accessibility reasons, IRCC says you can ask to file on paper.
- For technical problems, IRCC directs claimants to its web form for technical issues.
The point to remember
The cutoff does not end your claim. It changes how much you may need to redo. Knowing which situation you are in tells you what to do next.
